ANSWER Cough is one of the most common symptoms in children, and the opioid codeine has known antitussive qualities mediated by a central nervous system pathway. However, current evidence finds codeine to be no more effective than placebo for acute cough in children. Its safety profile and recent advances in understanding codeine’s variable effectiveness prohibit recommending codeine for cough in children.

In the past several years, the use of codeine in children, even for pain management, has become questionable.

I've used Compound Codeine Phosphate Oral Solution - in Chinese, 复方可待因口服溶液 - but I don't know if it's available OTC. It's manufctured by United Laboratories in Zhuhai and contains Codeine Phosphate, Ephedrine HCl, Potassium guaiacolsulfonate, and Triprolidine HCl - if that means anything to you. I have a 120ml bottle in a pale green box with English dosage instructions. As above, though, you may be better off visiting a hospital or clinic.

We have been traveling in China for 2 weeks and have had colds the entire time. The colds have now evolved into violent chest coughs. We have seen 3 doctors who have given us homeopathic or herbal medications, but these have been ineffective in either improving or colds or providing relief from the coughs. At home in the US, our doctor would prescribe a phenegren cough syrup with codeine to help with the coughs. Codeine does not seem to be available in China. Any recommendations for an effective alternative cough medicine that is available in China or guidance as to how we can obtain codeine would be most appreciated.

Real doctor? Doctors, even in Chinese hospitals will generally give you a choice of Chinese or western medecine. If you are not satisfied you can go to an internationsl hospital with a US doctor.

US traveler in medical trouble.
