Hueston, MD, professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. “Make sure you understand what the medicine is for before you buy it.” Here’s a guide to over-the-counter cold medications for adults (not kids!). Delsym's cough medicines provide 12 hours of cough relief with a single dose. Buy Delsym online or find a Delsym location near you.

If you have a cold or respiratory infection, coughing expels mucus/phlegm that builds up in your lungs. These droplets may contain viruses or bacteria that can make others sick, so always cover your mouth when coughing and wash your hands frequently.

You don't have to be sick to cough. Dust, pollen, smoke, and strong odors all can trigger a cough. Even though you're probably not spreading germs, it's a good idea to cover your mouth anyway.

Stock up the medicine cabinet for cold and flu season—no prescription necessary. These over-the-counter drugs will help you ride out the storm when you're.

What it treats: Nasal and head congestion Active ingredient: Pseudoephedrine.

Potential hazards: Increased heart rate, nervousness, or irritability, especially if you require a cup (or four) of Starbucks every morning. Some users also report insomnia, so start with the 12-hour version before you graduate to 24-hour coverage—and take it earlier in the day so it won't interfere with your much-coveted Z's. Before taking Sudafed, be sure to talk to your doc or pharmacist if you have a heart problem, high blood pressure, or asthma. Follow @WomensHealthMag Women's Health.

Sudafed 12 Hour Or Sudafed 24 Hour.

Good to know: Although it's an OTC product, pseudoephedrine is stored behind the pharmacist's counter, so you'll have to ask for it. The Sudafed PE seen on shelves contains phenylephrine—a D-list choice for your cold-and-flu-fighting needs. Research published in a 2009 issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology reported that congested people treated with phenylephrine didn't fare much better than the participants in the placebo group. However, those who popped a single dose of pseudoephedrine felt significantly more at ease within six hours. So it's well worth the extra step required to get it.

How it works: All the tissues in a warehouse store won't blow out your stuffy nose, because the snotty stuff isn't what's cramming up your nasal passages. Blame swollen blood vessels for the congestion, says Engle, who recommends turning to a pill packed with pseudoephedrine, a vasoconstrictor that will shrink them in less time than it takes to finish watching an episode of Glee.
