Does the prescription bottle have an expiration date on it? Look at the codeine pills and if they have a different color or smell off, don't take.

If you’ve wondered whether medicines really do need to be tossed after their expiration date, you’re got some company at the California Poison Control System, UC San Francisco and UC Irvine. Researchers from those institutions decided to satisfy their curiosity by testing the effectiveness of eight drugs that had been sitting around, unopened, in pharmacies for years after they had supposedly gone bad.

They noted that the Shelf-Life Extension Program allows drugs in federal stockpiles to be retained for up to 278 months after their stated expiration date if tests show they are still potent.

I have a 120 mL bottle of Acetaminophen with Codeine syrup, but it expired in 1999. The label doesn't name any other chemicals or ingredients.

Are we throwing away 39expired39 medications too soon?

An analysis of eight expired prescription drugs has found that most have active ingredients, including aspirin, codeine and hydrocodone.

It's impossible to say from the study results alone whether the eight drugs would be effective if used today, but "there's no reason to think that they're not," says Lee Cantrell, the lead author of the study and a professor of clinical pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco.

Two of the tested ingredients, aspirin and amphetamine, consistently fell below the 90% threshold, as did one sample of the painkiller phenacetin. On the other hand, three ingredients were found in amounts greater than 110% of label strength -- perhaps because those drugs predate quality-control regulations introduced by the FDA in 1963, the researchers say.

"All means from the manufacturers' standpoint is that they're willing to guarantee the potency and efficacy for the drug for that long," he says.

The reason there is a discard date is because you are supposed to discard it. After that date, there is no guarantee its as good as it should be. Also, with liquids there is always the chance of the fluid evaporating, thus making a more concentrated solution of medication, so you are getting more then you should.
