Antiretroviral drugs can cause many side effects, from diarrhea and nausea to fat redistribution and nerve damage. Find out more about symptoms, prevention.

Some antiretroviral drugs can be taken with food, and doing so may lessen their harmful effects. It may also be possible to alter drug dosage or frequency.

Patients should make sure their doctors are aware of all drugs they are taking. This means not only pharmaceuticals but also recreational drugs and complementary and alternative therapies. It may be that a side effect is due to one of these other substances, either directly or because of an interaction with the antiretroviral medication. The more information is shared with a doctor, the better equipped they will be to help.

The treatments for lipodystrophy are sadly limited.

Adverse drug reaction leading to hepatitis (drug-induced hepatitis) with granulomata. The meaning of this expression differs from the meaning of "side effect".

On the other hand, a headache is not usually serious (but may be in case of subarachnoid haemorrhage, subdural bleed, even a migraine may temporally fit criteria), unless it also satisfies the criteria for seriousness listed above.

Inheriting abnormal alleles of cytochrome P450 can alter drug metabolism.

As a booklet, it is the recommended general handout for distribution in any community and to share with friends, family and others.
