Lasix (furosemide) is an anthranilic acid derivative that is used as a strong diuretic. The drug is available as a generic. Lasix can be given orally and by IV. Lasix is used in adults and children to treat excessive fluid accumulation (edema) caused by congestive heart failure, liver failure, renal failure, and nephritic syndrome. Some clinicians use Lasix with antihypertensive drugs to control hypertension. Side effects include increased urination, thirst, muscle cramps, weakness and constipation.
