Promethazine, when combined with codeine, is used to relieve cough and other symptoms of Never take more cough syrup than has been prescribed.

Side effects may include: constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased or decreased blood pressure, nausea, occasional blurred vision, rash, sleepiness, vomiting, sensitivity to light, uncontrolled muscle movements, yellowing of the skin or eyes, severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to promethazine. Promethazine may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Use sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.

Children 6-12 years: The usual dose is 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) every 4-6 hours, not to exceed 30 mL in 24 hours.

Adults and adolescents ≥12 years: The usual dosage is 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters ) every 4-6 hours, not to exceed 6 teaspoons, or 30 mL, in 24 hours.

Use an appropriate measuring device; a household teaspoon may not be an accurate dosage measurement.

Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (such as sleep aids and muscle relaxers) while you are using promethazine with codeine; it may add to their effects.
